Filter media and systems to extract molecules

Imprinted polymers are typically used for low volume applications in laboratories, detecting the presence of specific molecules.  Ligar’s focus is on making large volumes of polymer in formats that are easy to use and familiar to engineers in the industries where they will be used.  Where it is needed, this includes pre-processing the materials to be filtered (for example, liquidising plant matter) and processes to efficienty remove the target molecules from the polymer.

Assuming there is no fouling, the polymers can be used through hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of cycles.  Cycling quickly allows us to reduce the size of the processing equipment compared to alternative systems, with this in turn reducing capital costs.

Filter plates

Our plates are used in industry-standard plate & frame filter systems, adapted to include an elution process (molecule recovery).  Ligar partnered with the Crown Research Institute Scion to develop imprinted polymer filter plates.  These hold the polymer in place and, critically, the fibres in the plates do not capture anything.  This means the plates only capture the target molecule.  They are certified safe for use in food contact applications.

Bead columns

Our beads are made with 100% imprinted polymer and, like the powders, have an extremely high surface area and capacity.  Unlike the powders, they do not compact and can be used in high volume, high pressure applications.  The filtration columns we use are industry-standard and include elution cycles to recover the molecules.  The system in the picture recovers chromium from solutions containing around 5,000 parts per million, but they can also be used to recover (or remove) molecules present at less than 1 part per million.

Powders

This is a scanning electron microscope close-up of our imprinted polymer powders, showing their extremeily high surface area.  The molecules the polymer will capture are far too small to see.  Powders can be stirred into liquids where they will capture the target molecules before being filtered out.  This is a very simple method of removing contaminants.

These polymer powders are also used in the filter plates.
